Portofino, a Paradise of timeless elegance

Portofino (ITALY / EUROPE)
In the heart of the Italian Riviera, on the Ligurian Sea lies a coastal town with a tranquil crescent harbor with a hill of olive groves  in its background. It’s called Portofino.

Portofino is featured on many postal cards and the town itself is just as pictured: beautiful in shape and color and its harbor has a piazza with tiny pastel , yellow, green, and blue houses. It was a  fishing village of historical and archaeological importance, which turned to a popular destination where you can enjoy the  as well as the magnificent landscape.

With regard to the landscape and the sea, of course, Portofino is a seaside resort with a lot of charm, between paths, beaches and bays. You can also find one of the sculptures known throughout the world: the Christ of the Abyss.

The most unforgettable view is reached by climbing a number of long, easy steps up from the harbor to the Fort of St. George, built in the mid-1500s.

Portofino boasts a tradition as a marine village dating back to Roman times under the name of Portus DelphiniThe Benedictines established a monastery in the 1400s on the site of Hotel Splendido only to abandon it in the 1500s after repeated raids by pirates. The building remained an empty ruin until the 1800s when a titled European family restored it as a summer villa. In the 1850s, British aristocrats began making Portofino popular.

Only 500 people live in Portofino , mainly fishing families, shop owners, and owners of  hotels or restaurants.

In addition to the wonderful sea, there are some fascinating buildings and monuments, left by the various families that have ruled Portofino over the centuries. One of these is certainly the Oratory of Santa Maria Assunta, with its gothic details and its architecture in full gothic style.

The Portofino Regional Nature Park and its protected marine area are a natural heritage, with seabeds dotted with coral formations, grasslands and a really wide variety of fish worthy of protection with the greatest possible attention.

You can visit the Cannon Bay , which is certainly a place very suitable for intimacy and for spending a day of romance with fascinating sunsets.

The coves make the place a favourite destination both for a bath and , beyond the view of the picturesque surroundings.

Another very suggestive beach is that of the Bay of Silence, where you can admire the beautiful play of light, as well as enjoy swimming.

A real pearl of the sea is waiting for you….
